Folios 95-98. Petition of John Henry Sprogel, from London. He is a British subject and inhabitant of Pennsylvania; and was the first person who, by virtue of a patent granted him by his late Majesty, ventures to fit out a ship at Ham to open a trade from thence to England and Pennsylvania. From the beginning the town of Altona, being sensible that such a trade would prove detrimental to its own, obstructed it, and when under sail and under English colours in the river Elbe, his ship was seized in a piratical manner and taken into Altona. Soon afterwards he fitted out another ship called the Prince of Wales but owing to threats of arrest by Altona and Gluckstad, the passengers left the ship and he again became a loser. Seeing neither the strongest instances of his Majesty's ministers nor the pretended respect of the Danish Court for his Majesty's honour has been able to procure the desired reprisals against the Danes in order to compensate his vast losses and restore the trade.
