Description

Folios 102-103. [Newcastle] from Kensington to Governor Hunter. Encloses the memorial of merchants trading to Jamaica complaining of the embargo laid upin their ships and the report of the Board of Ordnance concerning stores required in the island. In reference to the memorial it is ordered that all the merchant ships are to be immediately discharged and while continuing all necessary precautions for his safety, he is to take care to do nothing that may interrupt trade or cause unnecessary alarm. As to the ordnance stores, he is to observe that some of them may be more easily provided upon the spot, but that his Majesty's concern for the preservation of so vaulable a part of his dominions in America, has induced him at this time to supply them from his own stores "a thing pretty unusual and for which no provision is made by Parliament, it being understood that his Majesty's plantations abroad are, especially the most considerable of them, to provide themselves with such necessaries for their defence". Draft.
