Description

Folios 131-132. Minutes of the proceedings of the Coronation Committee. Upon the petition of the Duke of Argyll claiming to present the first gold cup his majesty drinks out of at dinner as Great Master of the Household of Scotland. Their lordships are of opinion that he do present the same in such manner as he presented it at the last coronation. Upon the petition of the Lady How and others (who are allowed by the Court of Claims to present his majesty with the first cup of silver gilt) praying Sir Richard Grosvenor may officiate and present the said cup in their behalf. Their lordships are of opinion that the same be allowed. Upon the petition of the Earl of Exeter claiming to officiate as Almoner, Mr. Blundell having ships finding that these persons have officiated in this office alternately, are of opinion that the Earl of Exeter do now officiate therein. Petition of Sir Peter Soam, praying that Mr. St. John may be allowed to officiate for him in holding the towel to his majesty (he being a minor). Their lordships are of opinion that his request be granted. Petition of Doctor Clopton paraying that Maurice Shelton, Esq., may be allowed to bring up to the King's table a charger of wafers, he being old and infirm. Their lordships are of opinion that his request be granted. Memorial of the Knights of the Thistle praying their rank of precedency at the coronation may be settled. Their lordships took the same into consideration, and some debates arising therupon, the further consideration therof if adjourned to Wednesday evening at 6 o' clock. Their lordships then took into consideration the queries referred by his majesty relating to the precedency of the Treasurer, Comptroller and Vice Chamberlain, and having examined into the precedents relating thereto, are of opinion that they have a right to walk by virtue of their offices next after the barons, and the Knights of the Garter to precede all other Privy Councillors not peers. And in regard his majesty hath ordered the Knights of the Garter to walk immediately after the barons. Their lordships propose that the same be altered and made agreeable hereto.
