Description

Folios 127-128. ----- from Whitehall to Earl of Portmore. The King was pleased to approve your conduct mentioned in your letter of the 4th instant inclosing a duplicate of yours to Lord Townshend of the 25th August. His majesty was glad to find that you had so strictly observed the suspension of hostilities agreed upon between your lordship and the Condi de Cas Torres; and is convinced that the complaint of the Spanish count in the Marquis de la Paris letter to the Cardinal de Fleury of your lordship's having broken through that suspension by repairing the fortifications of Gibraltar and by suffering a Spanish barque carrying provisions to their camp to be attacked by a man-of-war's boat is entirely groundless.... His majesty has no new orders to send your lordship, and was very pleased to find that your garrison was in so good a condition and that there was so little likelihood of the Spaniards being able to renew the attack. Count Tottembourg is lately gone from Paris to the Court of Spain with instructions to talk to them in so strong a manner upon the difficulties they make of raising the siege of Gibraltar and restoring the ships and effects they have seized in the West Indies belonging to His Majesty's subjects, that it will entirely undeceive that court if they vainly flattered themselves with the hope of detaching France from their allies and we shall soon learn the success of Count Rottembourg's negotiations when his majesty will know upon what he is to depend.
