Folios 30-31. J.Monson from Lincoln to [Newcastle]. I was at Grimsby when I received your Grace's letter to assist my brother George who is chosen there, when I went thither I thought I had made my own interest very good and safe here, but at my return found all was to begin again, for in my absence the two other candidates had given hard money,a thing before unknown in this town, which obliges me to do the same thing. Sir.T.Saunderson acts very heartily for Sir John Tyrwhit, and spends his money very freely for him, but without designing to hurt me, the consequence is, I must give so much money to secure my own votes .... that it will cost me nigh a thousand pounds more than it needed to have done would I have joined with Mr.Hall, but as your Grace expresses a desire to have Sir John chosen, let the consequences be what it will, I will not join with him, but assist Sir John what I am able without openly joining him.
