From 1962 Foreign Office
Madagascar became a colony of France in 1896, and British representation on the island from that time until 1960 was at consular level. In 1958 the colony adopted republican status and its name was changed to the Malagasy Republic, which became independent of France in June 1960. British representation was raised to embassy level in 1962. The name Madagascar was re-instated in 1975.
