FO 643
1942-1962
This series contains general correspondence of the Burma Secretariat inherited by HM Embassy in Rangoon under an agreement between the Foreign Office and the Burma Office, London, and of the Embassy itself.
The files in the first 56 boxes are arranged under broad subject or functional headings keyed to an alphabetical/numerical order. On the introduction in 1947 of a G.S.O. series of files (boxes 57-80) the headings were dropped from the file jackets; but, with the aid of a file index preserved in box 80, an effort has been made to continue them in the catalogue wherever continuity of affinity of subject matter could be established. Only exceptionally have cross-references from one file to another been given; but some assistance may be forthcoming from the file index.
Item references have been created using the former department reference number, apart from FO 643/68/U1 and FO 643/80/U1 which have been artificially created.
