Description

This series contains private and official correspondence and papers of Evelyn Baring, 1st Earl of Cromer. They cover his diplomatic career as Chief Secretary to the Viceroy of India, as Commissioner of the Egyptian Public Debt and (later) minister plenipotentiary in Egypt; and the period when he was active at home in parliamentary and political affairs. The papers include some personal and literary correspondence. It should be noted that all these papers, with the exception of certain holograph reports in volume 16, are printed, either officially or privately, or typed.

A second collection of papers was presented to the Public Record Office in 1980. It consists mainly of officially printed volumes, correspondence to and from Lord Cromer, five volumes of the amended "Modern Egypt" published in 1908 and miscellaneous newspaper cuttings, pamphlets and booklets.
