This series contains a collection of the papers accumulated by Lord John Augustus Hervey while in Florence. It consists largely of original letters to him from the secretary of state, consuls etc., and from ministers of the Grand Duke of Tuscany. There are also papers relating to Lord Hood's operations against the French at Toulon in 1793, some relating to Hervey's naval career in Canada; and papers accumulated by his nephew, Lord William Hervey as secretary of the legation at Madrid, 1830-1840.

The remaining papers (nos 1-18) were formerly in the possession of the Marchioness of Bristol and presented by her to the Foreign Office in September 1952. A few additional items were transferred in February and November 1960.
John Augustus, Lord Hervey was born on 1st January 1757, the eldest son of Frederick Augustus 4th Earl of Bristol and Elizabeth Davers. His early career was in the navy and he was promoted to captain on 15th March 1780. At one time he was senior naval officer on the St. Lawrence river in Canada. Then from 1787-1794, he was the minister to Tuscany, at Florence.
He married on 4th October 1779 Elizabeth Drummond of Quebec. He had one daughter who became the mother of Lord Howard de Walden. He died on 10th January 1796.
