Title
SP 78/239-250
Note
SP 78/239 deals almost exclusively with correspondence between Whitehall and the British Commissaries in Paris from January 1751 to November 1753. The negotiations are about Nova Scotia or Acadia, prisoners of war, prizes and sea limits and St. Lucia and the other neutral West Indian islands. The other papers consist of diplomatic correspondence between the Secretary of State, Southern Province and the Embassy in Paris, as follows: SP 78/240, January to June 1751 SP 78/241, July to December 1751 SP 78/242, July to December 1751 SP 78/243, January to May 1752 SP 78/244, May to July 1752 SP 78/245, August to December 1752 SP 78/246, January to March 1753 SP 78/247, April to July 1753 SP 78/248, August to December 1753 SP 78/249, January to June 1754 SP 78/250, January to July 1755 Please note that the file of correspondence for the period July to December 1754 is missing and also that while the King was in Hanover, some dispatches and duplicates were sent there. Matters given special prominence in these papers are: the situation in Northern Europe, the election of the King of the Romans and the claims of the Elector Palatine, the rift between the King of France and the Parliament of Paris about the refusal by the clergy of sacraments to suspected Jansenists, French naval and military preparations, the whereabouts of the Young Pretender and differences between Britain and France in America, culminating in the withdrawal of diplomatic representatives by both countries It may be helpful to refer to other State Papers as follows. SP 103/17 contains some additional correspondence, in particular ff. 91 to 138 about the East Indies. SP 103/117 is entitled `Narrative of the hostilities committed by the French upon the Ohio in North America and of the negotiations with Monseigneur de Mirepoix from April 1754 to ...', but the majority of the documents are duplicates of those listed here.
