Folio 108: Senate of Hamburg to Charles II. Thank him for his gracious treatment of their trade during war with Holland, but refer to continuing grave dissensions between them and English merchant adventurers over latters' burnt ships on Elbe [in 1666]; they [merchant adventurers] have contravened many articles [of past treaties] and follow up their unjust complaints with bitterness unreciprocated by themselves [i.e. Hamburgers], have instigated King against city and caused him to take actions unexpected of him; protest their innocence and ask him to weigh their envoy's evidence given to [London] commissioners and to pronounce such judgement as would make Emperor and King of Sweden understand that their interventions with an allied sovereign carry weight to free an innocent city from harassment in England; if English merchants still be not satisfied with outcome, they are free to refer their complaint to the 'ordinary' [i.e. Emperor as supreme judge].
