Description

Folio 94: Swann to Arlington. Duke John Frederick of Hanover [i.e. Brunswick-Lüneburg-Calenburg] has, in letter to King, transmitted by Swann to Morrice some months ago, given King title Majestas, being first of his house to do so and now expects reply with title Serenissimus; Swann advocates Arlington's support of duke's claim on following grounds: that he did not assist Dutch in last war whereas his brothers 'gott a vast somme of money by ingaginge with them when he was courted by them to entertaine the same conditions', and that he is entering 'so neere a blood alliance' [with royal house] by his [forthcoming] match with daughter of prince [i.e. count palatine] Edward [of Simmern], (princess Benedicta Henrietta), that granting of title, already given him by other kings, would very much oblige him to King. Elector of Saxony [John George II] 'is very importune to have the garter dispatcht unto him' and wishes to know what style to expect from King. Effective strength of Wrangel's army, mustered in bishopric of Bremen, is 11,000 men, 8,000 already sent to Sweden and Pomerania, 3,000 garrisoned in Bremen region. Queen Christina to go to Rome shortly. Detlef von Ahlefeldt, Danish minister, has fallen from his King's favour.
