Folio 66: Swann to [Williamson]. Has returned from his visit to princess Elizabeth [abbess of Herford] during which he was invited by princess Sophia [Elizabeth's sister] on behalf of her husband, duke Ernest Augustus of Brunswick-Lüneburg-Calenberg, [Protestant] bishop of Osnabrück, and his brother, duke George William of Brunswick-Lüneburg-Celle, to a conference with them; this he could not attend because of new 'great affront' by Dutch [burning of Sheerness, sailing up river Medway and raid upon Chatham dockyard, etc., June 12-13] which had caught royal navy unawares despite Swann's and others' warnings; thinks Brunswick dukes wish to express their 'dissatisfaction' with Dutch upon their [dukes'] last engagement with them against bishop of Münster. Wrangel feeling strongly about recent Dutch assault. Death of electress of Brandenburg; conjectures about its possible consequences, since she and her mother were 'the onley instrument that engaged him [i.e. elector] against his naturall disposition to cleave to the Hollander to the prejudice of our Kinge'.
