Description

Folio 63: Swann to [Williamson]. Reports on his conference with Wrangel at count of Oldenburg's court; Wrangel, much opposed to English negotiations with Holland which, in his opinion, will be regretted later, submitted that there was yet sufficient time to attackDutch by land which he thought was the speediest and surest way; if England advanced Sweden £200,000 or at least £100,000, this would enable them to march; he further informed Swann that he was certain Dutch had shipped 6,000 men land forces in flat-bottom boats to make a descent and that English should look to Isle of Wight; fieldmarshal [Paul] Würz whom he, Swann, met at queen Christina's court at Hamburg, advised that one should keep an eye on the northernmost part of Scotland, looking towards Norway, where Dutch intended to encourage rebels to take up arms again and thus easily create a diversion which could be 'put into good posture' before English could reach and suppress them. Queen Christina voiced pro-Habsburg and anti-French sentiments and thought England and Holland should join 'both by sean and land to faal [sic] upon French and dampe his pride'. Electors of Brandenburg and Saxony show great loyalty to empire; former has duke of Neuburg's interest in succession of Poland much at heart.
