Folio 138. Anthony, earl of Shaftesbury, Lord Lieutenant of and J.P. for Dorset, to [Newcastle], with information that he had sent his baliff to question William Tilsey of Wimborne Minster concerning the possession of arms, but he was found to be absent from home. Enquires whether it might be more profitable to undertake general searches of the houses of Roman Catholics in the country rather than to issue local warrants for searches confined to one area only. Encloses: 1) a copy of the affidavit of James King, constable of Wimborne Minster, dated 11 Oct., relating to his search for Tilsey and his supposed whereabouts, together with those of Mr. Webb of Wiltshire and one Berkeley of Canford Magna who are outside his jurisdiction. Sworn before Shaftesbury. 2) a copy of a resolution, dated 9 Oct., meeting of the deputy lieutenants, J.P.'s and gentlemen of the county, held to discuss its defence at Dorchester.
