Folio 48. Sir John Cope, at Berwick on Tweed, to the marquis of Tweeddale, advising of the latest reports he had received of the rebels in and around Edinburgh and enclosing: 1) a letter from Gen. Jo[shua] Guest, commander of Edinburgh castle, dated 8 Oct., stating that his troops had fired upon the rebels' guard-houses nearby in an attempt to have their communications with the city restored. 2) an undated letter [copy] from Charles, `Prince Regent', to the town of Edinburgh in response to Gen. Guest's threat to fire on Edinburgh. 3) 2 printed declarations of the Young Pretender, dated 2 and 5 Oct. respectively at Holyrood House, in connection with the blockade of Edinburgh, other copies of which had been pasted on the town gates.
