Folio 53. Edmund Calamy to Newcastle. Enclosing and recommending Sir Thomas Brand's case in the dispute between him [Brand] and the Turkey Company. The case referred to. At the beginning of Queen Anne's reign Sir Thomas Brand was employed by the Secretary of State to write and embellish letters to Eastern Princes and was paid £10 for each letter by the Treasury. But letters to Turkey or an account of any other trading company, particularly such as were credentials for ambassadors, were paid for by the company for whose use these despatches were sent, and accordingly the Turkey Company constantly paid him £10 for each letter. This method of payment continued for some pass until he obtained an established salary of £60 per annum on account of all Government letters. The Turkey Company still continued to pay him for their letters and never failed in their payment until they refused to pay him for the last Credential Letters sent by Lord Kinoul. He desires that the Duke of Newcastle would end this dispute by requesting the Turkey Company to pay for these letters.
