Description

Lowe to Quarles. Contents of last letter. Details of cloth sales. Has received Quarles's letters of 18 and 28 December regarding purchases of cloths and supplying Jackson's servants. Damage done by Turkish wars more likely to make people reduce than increase trade with affected areas. Few counter-measures being taken in Germany. We hear 30,000 Turks are wintering in Hungary and have moved up almost to Vienna, taking 60,000 captives with them. Omens for summer bad. However, truth of all this suspect, but we may have confirmation from Nuremburg. If Jackson's servants can make sales at Leipzig they should do so secretly, though have doubts they will be able to, and if they do, profits will be small. Details concerning trade and prices in Stade. Thinks little English cloth will sell. Soldiers prefer German cloth which is thicker and stronger and made in abundance at Meissen. Lowe thinks prices will fall and advises Quarles not to go on buying at high prices. Will not buy madder until weather better and can ship it at once - it will probably be cheaper by then. If it goes below 60s. per vat (as he hopes), will buy 8-10 vats, but will not buy other goods until Quarles orders him to. Further details of prices. Repeats usual warnings about quality of cloth - he has some cloths which are virtually unsaleable - specific complaints about certain clothiers and their wares. Financial matters. Exchange rate. Dated at Stade [near Hamburg].
