Lowe to Quarles. Contents of last letter - details of sales. Danger from the Turks. Dissension between the princes of Germany for religious and other reasons and their dislike of the Emperor make them careless of the common enemy. Some good news, some bad. Raab [now Györ in Hungary, west-north-west of Budapest], last defence of Hungary is lost and Germany's only defence is Vienna, which the Turks mean to besiege next, though they cannot do so until winter is over. Lowe trusts by spring a power will be prepared to resist and recover lost lands. This news and recent bankruptcies at Stade and Frankfurt make men afraid to give credit and suspicious of everyone - they fear to sell because of the danger of bad debts and fear to keep stock and risk prices falling. People wish to deal in money or goods, not bills of exchange. Details of goods Lowe has bought, with prices. Details of 25 cloths sold since last letter. Has sold none of Billingsley's cloth. Future plans. 23 October. Has since sold a further 56 cloths - details. General discussion of trade and prospects. Criticises quality of cloths Quarles has sent - faults in the pressing. All prices in Stade very high - details. Exchange rate. P.S. details of financial transactions. Dated at Stade [near Hamburg].
