Description

Lowe to Quarles. Details of letter of 9 Sept. Financial matters. Gathers Quarles still has not sent cloths for Peter Vermuires - too late to remedy now, hopes Vermuires will wait until fleet arrives. Thanks Quarles for assigning him the profit on 10 cloths, feels self unworthy of this favour. Times hard in Stade and giving of credit dangerous, but trusts will continue to avoid bankruptcy. An Amsterdam man (with whom Lowe had no outstanding dealings) has gone bankrupt, and his brother has fled from Danzig and his father from Stade - Lowe hopes he is not in debt to Quarles at Middleburg. Another bankrupt owes Lowe a small debt and there is little hope of recovery. A Strasbourgeois bankrupt at Frankfurt, but none of the Company were involved with him. Lowe hopes to hear of no more bankruptcies during this market. Verporten wants 30 cloths as soon as fleet arrives but has not yet agreed the price - Lowe hopes to get £20 per cloth. Is sure Turkish war will increase sales of cloth and raise prices, especially in the spring. Financial matters. Will try at Leipzig and elsewhere to raise the £2000 Quarles has promised to lend Ralph Allen. Exchange rate. P.S. Has now agreed on £20 per cloth for 30 or 33 cloths with Verporten's partner. Dated at Stade [near Hamburg].
