Lowe to Quarles. From Quarles's letter of 9 August hears the Company's ships are free from arrest. Hopes fleet will arrive before Michaelmas. Sorry Quarles has not sent cloths to Emden - send plenty in fleet. Lowe's arrangement with customs officers at Stade. Advises Quarles not to appear in the transaction either in person or through his servants but to use an intermediary and a strange mark. Lowe will board the ship as soon as possible and substitute Quarles's mark, convey the packs onto the appointed ships and receive them as if from the appointed ships - they should never be suspected. They must ensure that the masters of the interlopers keep back the cockets and do not send the cloths until they have seen Lowe. Asks Quarles to warn him if any of the masters of the appointed ships are unfriendly. Has heard the Council have decreed all ships shall discharge in Stade and none in Hamburg - if true will greatly improve trade, though will force out interlopers, which will be a pity, but glad of general benefit to the Company. Hears corn has fallen at home and it has also fallen in Stade - therefore assumes Quarles will not buy. Financial transactions. Exchange rate. Dated at Stade [near Hamburg].
