Description

Lowe to Quarles. Contents of letters of 14 August about new fustians, financial matters and grain. Advice on shipment of cloth - use Interlopers if fleet cannot come until after Michaelmas, but only if master trustworthy. If he is willing, act through Jackson and do not appear in transaction yourslef. Weather now poor and presumably not much better at home. West and south west winds, but thinks corn will stay at reasonable price especially as none bought for Italy, which should keep down freight charges. Hears other members of Company have similarly been making enquiries about grain. Advises selling the fustians according to their quality rather than according to the price Lowe paid for them, as he will not get them so cheap again - nor will he get any at all unless he orders them. Hopes to supply Quarles exclusively. Exchange rate high and more profitable to send home goods than bring in bills of exchange - will avoid using both interest and bills of exchange as far as possible. Advises Quarles to buy cloth he needs then hold off for a month or so to bring down prices before restocking. Madder and other dyes will get cheaper. If too many cloths come in the fleet, the market will be glutted. Exchange rate. Dated at Stade [near Hamburg].
