Description

Lowe to Quarles. In regard to Quarles's enquiries about price of corn and freight charges - old wheat £17.10s. per last, the new (in about a month) will be about £16. Some surplus in Stade, but more at Hamburg and probably cheaper there - also freight easier. Freight charge 15s.-16s. per last according to vessel. Good wheat and rye mixture £16 per last, rye alone £10. Can send plenty if Quarles wishes via Hamburg, but not economic to send via Emden. There was rain early in the season in Stade, but harvest weather good and harvest in good condition - hopes situation the same at home. Will continue enquiries so as to be able to buy quickly if Quarles wants grain. Contents of a short letter sent to Quarles same day with a bale of fustians - details of price and arrangements for payment. If Quarles finds them profitable, Lowe can send 1000 a year. Wishes Quarles would send cloth to Emden as he is losing opportunities by not doing so. Booth and Wolters angry at not being supplied while Vermuires is. Financial transactions. Shipping of corn dangerous - Hamburgers poor mariners and may meet enemies at sea. Would he want to ship openly or covered by a burgher? Jacob Langelman could be used. Weather seems likely to turn bad again, but most of harvest already in, so no shortages likely. Lowe thinks may be wise to wait a bit and take advantage of any scarcity which might arise at home. Turks have much increased their power - war will be prolonged. They have an army of 100,000 and plan to attack Vienna, say reports from Hungary. If they take Vienna it may hinder sales of English cloth, though colours will remain in demand. Advises Quarles still to send 250. Exchange rate. Dated at Stade [near Hamburg].
