Description

Lowe to Quarles. Contents of letter of 25 July. Glad Quarles trying to supply him cloth for Emden and Stade. Booth has heard about the 22 cloths - says if more come he will buy, but not at a higher price. Lowe had wanted to ask a higher price anyway and this determines him to do so. Sorry Quarles has delayed shipment for Emden - fears it will now be prevented altogether by Company's ban on shipping. Particularly asks Quarles to send 14 cloths for Peter Vermuires. If Stade fleet likely to be delayed by pressing of ships, Quarles should send 100 cloths secretly to Emden and Lowe will find a means of fetching them or persuade his customers to go there. Trade tactics. Advises sending 30-40 cloths in an interloper if the Master can be trusted, to arrive before the fleet, even if only by 2-3 weeks, so Lowe can catch Leipzig even if he misses Frankfurt. In addition asks for 250 cloths in the fleet as it will be the last before Christmas. Must all be of good quality. Has sold last 6 remaining in Stade. Asks Quarles to discourage Bowdler from dealing in his sorts of cloth - it is detrimental to Quarles's trade. Advises him not to buy for about 6 weeks after fleet sails - may bring prices down - but not to delay too long and lose opportunity. Exchange rate. Dated at Stade [near Hamburg].
