Description

Lowe to Quarles. Contents of letter of 10 April. Details of sales at show day - 85 cloths sold. Only 13 now unsold, though they are poor quality and must be sold cheap. Urges Quarles not to buy to cheap as cheap cloth hard to sell and unprofitable. Kentsso poor, Lowe's customers will not buy and go to other men - it will drive away their custom even for other types. Demand for Readings good and many customers, including Netherlanders with commissions to buy for High Germany and Hungary. Lowe has rationed some customers and promised them more supplies from next fleet - has already promised 150 cloths. Therefore Quarles must send as many as he can even at expense of losing shipment to Middleburg, as they can all be sold in Stade - and Middleburg not restricted as to number of fleets it can receive. Send 300 in next fleet and 200 or at least 150 in winter fleet. Advice on what types and colours to send. Lowe will hasten collection of moneys owing to pay for them if necessary. Use of coloured cloth in Stade continually increasing. Could sell 500 readings and 150-200 Kents a year if Quarles would send them. Has not yet bought the madder. The factors in Hamburg have pushed the price to 90s. and wish to push it higher, despite signs of mutiny among dyers, clothsellers and workers against the Netherlanders. Verporten thinks there will be an order issued about madder within 14 days and advises Lowe to wait before buying. All goods still very expensive and likely to go higher. Will not buy without Quarles's commission. Exchange rate. Dated at Stade [near Hamburg].
