Documents concerning the farm of the new excise on wines (ff. 189-193): ? Report on the petition of Sir John Smyth. By act of parliament dated [blank] an additional excise on wines and strong liquors has been imposed, but arrangements have not yet been made for collection, 1649-1651 [cf. ff.189-191]. The farm is to go to the highest bidder, and the proceeds for the two years divided equally between Smyth and Sir James Stewart. If neither of them is awarded the farm, the grantee must give surety for this payment. Interest is also due on the sums owed by the state to the two men. [Incomplete; very faded and dirty]. [Endorsed, in different hand]: 'Sr John Smith [? ane] report and ane supplicacione'.
