Extract from the records and acts of parliament [cf. Acts Parlt. Scot. vi, pt.2, p.453b; Reg. Privy Council Scot. 2nd series, viii.133]. Commission to Sir Robert Adair, Thomas Hay, Hugh and 'Uchtrie' McDugall and John Kennedy, or any three of them, to try Marian (Marjoun) Shenan, wife of John Jamieson, Janet McKenan, wife of Alexander Lowrie, 'Africt' [? Elam], wife of John McLung, Marian Russell of Glenluce and Isabel Biggin in the parish [?es] of Strathnaver on suspicion of witchcraft [Blank spaces for date and place]. The commissioners are to summon witnesses, appoint clerks, procurators fiscal, dempsters and other officials of the court, and return an account of their proceedings to parliament or the committee of estates. The order was originally signed by [John Campbell, earl of] Loudoun, chancellor. The extract was made by Sir Archibald Johnstone of Warriston, clerk register. [Endorsed, in different hand; whole entry to* crossed through]: 'Act and commissioun for the trying of Marjoun Shenan and uthers of the cryme of Witchcraft wt in the presbetrie of * Stranrawer 29 Junij 1649'.
