Obligation by Andrew Oswald, merchant, burgess of Edinburgh, [cf. f.184] to his daughters Elizabeth and Anna by his wife Margaret [née Cumyng]. He instructs his heirs, executors, etc. to pay to Elizabeth 4,000 marks Scots and to Anna 3,000 marks at the Whit Sunday or Martinmas following his death, together with 300 marks to each of them for 'expenses' in the event of default, and the usual interest for any period after the contracted dates if the sums remain unpaid. He agrees to have the obligation registered in the books of council and session or in the commissary's, sheriff's or town court books of Edinburgh, to have the force of a decree allowing for the penalties of horning, etc. and appoints [blank] his procurators. The document was written by William King, 'writer in Edinburgh'. Two witnesses, including King, are named. [Signed by] Oswald and the witnesses. [Followed by] Note [in different hand]: Oswald's procurator [unnamed] appeared and consented to the registration. [Endorsed, in yet another hand]: 'Ob. Androw Oswald. To his twa dochtris'. . (i) Edinburgh, 7 June 1647. (ii) Edinburgh, 1 [?November] 1648. [The amounts mentioned, and some of the dates, have been inserted in different ink, and probably in a different hand.]
