Obligation by Robert and George Logan, brothers, of [? Airth Oranttis'] concerning a loan of 160 marks Scots from Janet (Jonet) Bruce, wife of Colonel William Baillie of Letham. They contract to repay it, together with 20 marks for 'coists, skaythes and expenses' in case of default, by Martinmas 1636, and agree to have the obligation registered in the books of the council and session, to have the strength of a decree allowing for the penalties of horning. They appoint [blank] their procurators. The document was written by Andrew Cowie, notary public. The witnesses were Sir James Bruce of Powfoulles, Patrick Bruce of Newto[? w]n, James Bruce, [? son] of Sir James, and John Maxwell, servant of the creditor. [Signed by] George Logan and three witnesses. [Followed by] Two notes [in same hand as original]: 1. Robert Logan signs with his 'hand led' by Andrew Cowie, since he cannot write. 2. Statement by Cowie, certifying 1. Latin. Notarial sign. [Endorsed, in yet another hand]: George Sybbald, procurator for the Logans, appeared and consented to registration. [Signed by] Sybbald. Dated at [? Airth].
