(i) [Various parts of one document, bound up in wrong order]. Royal order to [blank], sheriffs in hac parte. John, Lord Cranston states that before Whit Sunday 1632 he ordered [over 30 names, inserted ? in different hand in very faded ink] to vacate hislands in Liggartwood, Ormiston and elsewhere by that date, in accordance with the relevant act of parliament, so that he, as lawful owner, could take possession. Since the defenders still refuse to quit the property, the sheriffs are to summon them to appear before the lords of council and session on 5 March, and to leave the lands concerned or show reasonable cause why they should remain there. If they do not attend the hearing the lords will proceed to judgement in their absence. [Signed]: Ro. Pringill. Seal [now fragmentary]. Notarial sign. '4 Febrij 1633'. [In different hand]: 'Writtin be Mr. Rot.' [torn] [Endorsed, in yet other hands]:, 31 January 163[3]. (ii) 1. 'Cranstoun contra Tenentis de ... [torn]. 23 July [?1633]. (iii) 2. By William [? Slinker], sheriff in hac parte. On 23 February 1633 he personally summoned [long list of names] and left copies of the summons for others [named] at their dwellingplaces. Several witnesses [named] to his actions. Seal. 3. [In same hand as 2.]: On the same day he summoned several more persons [named]. Several witnesses to his action. 163[3]
