Acknowledgement by Henry Oliphant, writer, of debt of 440 marks Scots to his brother-in-law William Burtane, son of James Burtane, deceased, merchant, burgess of Edinburgh. Oliphant binds himself, his heirs and assigns to pay the debt by Whit Sunday 1615; he will also pay £20 Scots for 'expenses' and registration to guard against default, and 40 marks' annual interest from Whit Sunday 1612 to Whit Sunday 1615. He consents to registration of the obligation in the books of council and session or the town books of Edinburgh, and to a degree of the lords [of council] or of the provost and baillies of Edinburgh. He appoints Mr. Thomas Wilson and [blank] as his procurators, and names witnesses. [Signed by] Oliphant and four witnesses [named]. Dated at Edinburgh.
[Endorsed, in different hands]: 1. Names of parties to the suit, 8 November 1611. 2. Oliphant's procurator consents to registration in the books of council and session. [Faded, now illegible signature], 8 November 1611.
