Part of a [? legal registration of a] discharge of Sir Robert Gordon of Lochinvar from a debt. Archibald Thomson, tailor, burgess of Edinburgh, 'cessioner and assigney underwritten', certifies that on 22 June 1609 Gordon and five others [named, at least one now deceased] borrowed 10,000 marks Scots from Edward Edgar (Edyar), merchant, burgess of Edinburgh, his wife Margaret [née Mitchell] and [on behalf of] their son Clement; all three creditors are now deceased. The debtors contracted to pay an annual 'rent' of ten chalders of barley at Whitsun and Martinmas, beginning in 1610, and to give the creditors legal documents to certify the agreement. The creditors could demand payment of the principal at any 'term' after 20 May 1610, under penalty of 1,000 marks 'expenses' in case of failure. The obligation was registered in the books of council and session on 12 April 1610. On 18 June 1622 Clement Edgar legally discharged Gordon and the surviving debtors, he having received the principal sum and annual payments, 'lyke as I haif instantlie delyverit to the said Sir ...'. [End of M.S.]. [cf. f.147]. Dated at Edinburgh.
