Documents concerning legal proceedings: Hugh Halcro against George Millar. (ff 110-114): Royal order to [blank], sheriffs in hac parte. Hugh Halcro of Aikers, owner of the mills of Tenstan in Sandwick, Mainland, Isles of Orkney, has leased them to GeorgeMillar of Browagan at a rent of six meills [a)rent or tax b)meal] of meal, Orkney weight, equivalent to nine bolls [measure of capacity for grain or weight for flour] of meal. The defender has occupied and worked the mills continuously since 1592, but has never paid the pursuer any meal nor the price of it, calculated at £4 a boll. He is therefore to be summoned before the lords of council and session on 31 January next to pay what he owes. Witnesses [unnamed] are also to be summoned. [Signed]: A. White (Quhyte). Seal. Notarial sign. Marginal note: 'ultimo Maij 1609'. [Endorsed]: 1. By John Robertson, sheriff in hac parte. On 11 November 1608 he personally summoned George Millar, and gave him a copy of the summons. Two witnesses [named] to his action. [Seal, said to be affixed, now missing]. 2.-4. Jottings [in two or three hands], including names of parties to the suit. Dated at Edinburgh.
