Extract from the act book of the lords of council and session. Registration of an agreement concerning a loan of 16 June 1593. Master Umphra [sic] Blinsel, procurator for Francis Napier (Naiper) of Pithever, master assayer, and Margaret [née Mowbray] his wife, and Master John Nicolson, procurator for James Dalgleish senior, merchant, burgess of Edinburgh, Katherine [née Tyndale] his wife and Robert his son, appeared and asked to have the obligation registered. Napier has borrowed £1,000 from Dalgleish, to be paid [? together with] £100 'annual rent' from his lands in Broughton in the sheriffdom of Edinburgh. Details are given of an agreement by which Dalgleish has assigned the debt to his son Robert, and of how it may be redeemed. Payment is to be made at St. Giles' church, Edinburgh, 'upon the buriall place' of James, earl of Moray. Since no parties to the contract can write, the 'signatures' have been appended by David Dickson, notary public and one of four witnesses [named]. [Signed]: Joannes Skene. [Endorsed, in different hand]: Note on registration of contract, with names of parties and sums involved. [Cf. f.98]. Dated at Edinburgh.
