Documents concerning legal proceedings: John Maxwell against William [Maxwell], Lord Herries. (ff. 71-77): Depositions of seven witnesses [named] for the pursuer. Five claim to know nothing of the matter. Robert Maxwell of Edinburgh, a former servant of Lady Herries, went to Terregles in Dumfriesshire, where she died, to enquire if she had left anything to him. He saw some of Lord Herries' servants interfering with oxen working there: they ejected the lady's servants and paid them 'double fie'. He saw no other interference, but heard by 'report of the cuntrey' that Lord Herries had taken charge of all Lady Herries' goods. Andrew Crawfurd of Edinburgh saw some of Lord Herries' servants threshing corn, and some carriage horses, formerly in the possession of Lady Herries, taken away; Lord Herries now has them. The witness knows only by 'generall report of the haill cuntrey' that Lord Herries has taken charge of the entire property. [Signed]: Montgomery.
