Documents concerning legal proceedings: John Anderson of Dunfermline against Bessie Paulle [née Cairns] and George Bickerton (Bikartoun) (ff. 59-69): (i) Extract from the act book of the lords of council and session. Both parties appeared through their procurators, Edward Bruce and Thomas Wilson. The defenders denied the charges. 7 July is assigned for the pursuer to prove his case. He is to have letters to summon witnesses, and to bring with him any relevant documents in his possession. The defenders are also to be summoned. [Signed]: Alexander Hay. Notarial sign. Marginal notes [in two different hands]: 1. 'Witnesses present at the bar' entered three times. 2. Names of parties to the suit. Edinburgh, 26 June 1593. (ii) Notes at foot [in a third hand]: 1. 'Partibus ut matt'. 2. 'Find no [? process] against Bessie Cairnes who is deceissit ...'. 3. 'David Stoks declarit he can nayther writ nor read'. 4. Both parties, personally present, [? swore to depose faithfully]. 'And Wilsone protestit that the depositiouns of the witnesses who can nayther writ nor read [? prove] nothing'. 5. 24 July is assigned for a further hearing. 7 July 1593
