Documents concerning legal proceedings: John Anderson of Dunfermline against Bessie Paulle [née Cairns] and George Bickerton (Bikartoun) (ff. 59-69): Royal order to George Durie and [blank], sheriffs in hac parte. The lords of council and session have assigned 7 July for a further hearing of Anderson's suit. Fourteen witnesses [named] and the defenders are to be summoned to appear. [Signed]: James. J. Hay. Seal. Notarial sign. [Endorsed]: 1. By George Durie, 'messinger and sheriff'. On 1 July he summoned some witnesses [named] personally, and others [? by leaving copies of the summons] at their houses. He also summoned the defenders personally. Four witnesses [named] to his actions. [Signed]: 'Durie, messinger, wt my hand'. Seal, said to be affixed, now missing. 2. Names [in different hand] of parties to the suit. Dated at Edinburgh.
