George Leveson Gower 2nd Earl Granville was born on 11th May 1815, the eldest son of the 1st Earl Granville and Lady Harriet Elizabeth Cavendish. He was educated at Eton and Christ Church Oxford.
He entered parliament in 1836 and from 1840-41 was Under Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs in Lord Melbourne's ministry. He succeeded to his father's peerage in 1846. His career advanced rapidly through such posts as Vice President of the Board of Trade, Paymaster of the Forces and Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster. From 1855 onwards he was the liberal leader of the House of Lords. He had three terms of office as Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs; 1851-1852, 1870-1874, and 1880-1885.
He married twice: first in 1840 Maria Louisa daughter of the Duc de Dalberg and second in 1865 Castalia Rosalind Campbell. He died on 31st March 1891.
