The first 19 volumes of this series were presented to the Foreign Office by Lord Gerald Wellesley, a great-grandson of Pierrepont, in 1934; a further bundle of papers was presented by the same, then Duke of Wellington in 1958.

Administrative / biographical background

The Hon. Henry Manvers Pierrepoint was born on the 18th March 1780, the third son of Charles Medows (later Pierrepoint) 1st Earl Manvers and Anne Orton. From 1802-1804 he was a Private Secretary in the Foreign Office, and he then entered the Diplomatic Service. In 1804 he was appointed as Minister to Sweden, where he remained until 1807. Later that year he returned on a special mission. He married in 1818 Sophia daughter of the 1st Marquess of Exeter. He died on 10 November 1851.
