The records produced by the various Foreign and Commonwealth Office departments which handled the United Kingdom's economic relations with foreign, commonwealth and colonial countries. The correspondence originated by these departments deals principally with economic, trade, finance and fiscal matters, but can, especially in the case of the Rhodesia Economic Department, also touch on political or diplomatic affairs.
Consists of the following departments' records: Asia Economic Department (FCO 11); Common Market Department (FCO 20); European Economic Organisations Departments (FCO 30); Rhodesia Economic Department (FCO 35); Western Economic Department (FCO 62); European Integration Department (External) (FCO 98).
The organisational tactic of having economic departments dealing with geographical areas was one operated by the Commonwealth Office, and with the exception of the Rhodesia Economic Department, this approach did not continue after October 1968. However, both the Commonwealth Office and the Foreign Office had departments dealing with the preparations for the United Kingdom's entry into the European Economic Communities, and the European Economic Integration Department which succeeded them dealt with wider European economic questions.
