This series contains general correspondence of the British legation and consulates in China. In addition to correspondence between the legation, consulates and the Foreign Office, there is correspondence with chinese authorities, colonial governments, ports, fleets, India, Supreme Court and Foreign Ministries etc. Also includes correspondence relating to Korea up to 1896.
Of the subject volumes 1-540, within FO 228/2126-2753, the following numbers were not used: 452, 481 and 538. Of the dossiers 1-14457 within FO 228/2754-3575, the following numbers were not used: 8B, 8E, 8F, 8H, 8I, 25A, 25F, 25G, 25M, 31H, 34F, 34H, 40D, 46F, 46J, 46K, 46N, 108N, 183L and 235A, 235B.
On 3 May 1927 a new system of subject dossiers was adopted. The dossiers were bound annually, the subject reference number being retained year by year. Each volume contains a list of contents.
Of the subject volumes 1-540 within FO 228/2126-2753 the following are missing: 19-34A, 63, 140, 153, 259, 353, 406-408, 412, 435-448. Of the dossiers in FO 228/2754-3575 the following are missing: 1, 5H, 5J, 25J, 34D, 46, 46G, 51G, 124C, 183B, 183D, 183N, 183Y, 895, 2376 and 2980.
