Folio 113: Stormont to Weymouth. When asked to confirm the reports of the arming and mobilising of naval officers and that the die was cast for a break with Britain, Vergennes prevaricated. Maurepas said no orders had yet been given but France had to protect her trade from British privateers. No agreement with the Americans had been concluded. The king wanted peace. `Nous ne vous attaquerous pas'. Both ministers lacked frankness. He refers to La Motte-Piquet.
