Folio 97: Deposition by William Pitts. late master of the brig Wilkes, sailing from St. John's to Barbados. It was captured off Barbados by the privateer sloop Intrepid and taken into Martinique. The captain had his commission from Bingham. He was the only person out of a crew of 95, who spoke English. There was also a French captain.
Date and place: 1777 Oct 29 Newfoundland.
