Folio 246: Note delivered to Stormont. Orders have been given to all absent ship-carpenters to report to Brest, to be shared with other ports. Similar orders have been issued to several naval officers. Work has begun on 5 ships of the line at Brest, 4 at Toulon and1 at Rochefort, each with 70 cannons. The aim is to have 54 ships of the line ready for action by next Spring. Estaiug has put forward a plan of campaign in case war breaks out. Nevertheless France wishes to preserve peace. Spain has delivered a state of the navy composed of 62 ships of the line and 22 frigates ready for service.
