Folio 200: Stormont to Weymouth. Portugal's declaration destroys all suspicions propagated by Britain's secret enemies. He hardly knows Almodovar [Spanish ambassador to Britain 1778-1779] but believes him to be `of very slender abilities'. Orders have been sent to Brest to prepare and arm 10 more ships of the line to be ready in 6 months. He encloses a decree [missing here but ? f.216] about adding to naval armaments. The Parlement rejected it and resolved to send a Remonstrance. Stormont comments on the poor state of French finances. He encloses letter for the king from Condé [see f.109].
