Folio 53: Declaration by John Brewer, master of the Manning. She was captured off the Lizard on her way from Jamaica and taken as a prize into St. Nazaire. He went to Nantes, where there were officers in the pay of the Americans, who had escaped from prison in Portsmouth or Plymouth. Because there was no provision for subsistence for the crew of the Manning, many of these destitute sailors signed with the rebels, because they could not get back to England.
Date and place: 1777 Nov 8 London.
