Folio 7: Stormont to Weymouth. He went to Vergennes after seeing Maurepas and went into details. Maurepas dislikes details. Vergennes refused to be questioned about ships building in Amsterdam. The comte de Vaux was concerned in fitting out ships for the rebels. Vergennes denied knowledge of 2 people mentioned in SP 78/304 f. 262. Stormont did not believe him. Vergennes asked for notes to assist his memory [f. 13]. Stormont protested at the activities of Chaumont and said that, if he permitted them to continue, Stormont must consider them to be secretly ordered by the French government. Vergennes denied knowledge of the assembly of ships at Bilbao. Stormont thinks they may meet away from any port.
