Folio 174: Stormont to Weymouth. While Maurepas has given explicit assurances about the Jamaican ships, Sartine wants to evade the issue. The troops for the West Indies are embarked and will sail with the first fair wind. They consist of 6 battalions, 2 companies of dragoons without horses and 2 brigades of the artillery, which are double officered, with a large quantity of munitions and spare uniforms. He describes other suspicious circumstances. There are wild rumours, such as that the fleet will surprise New York. He hopes that British cruisers will shadow the fleet. Maurepas wants to bring back Aiguillon but the king hates him. Castries hopes to become minister for War. The court is at Choisy and will soon be at Fontainebleau.
