Folio 152: Stormont to Weymouth. In spite of the appearance of anger towards the French government by the Americans, several well-informed people believe that France has a deep plan against Britain, which will emerge in 3 or 4 months. Stormont does not trust the French ministers' promises but does believe in their prudence, particularly if Britain is successful in America. If France sends only 4,000 troops escorted by frigates to the West Indies, this poses no threat to Britain. If she sends a fleet, it would imply a treacherous plan.
