Folio 221: Stormont to Weymouth. As he is aware of the dangers from false or misleading intelligence, he tries to give some idea of the degree of credibility each report seems to deserve. It is rumoured that secret orders have been given to du Chaffault to sail at once with 6 ships of the line and convoy home the Newfoundland fishermen and that six ships at Brest are to be armed to replace them. He doubts this as he is assured that no such orders have been issued from Sartine's office. Maillebois and Estaing were called to a secret committee with Sartine. Speculation is that plans for invading England were discussed. Stormont, however, believes that Maurepas formed it to discuss the defence of the Isle de France, with Montbarey and St. Germain.
